Working with Actions

You can set up actions for pages or for objects on a page. All of the actions are displayed in the Actions Organiser for the page or object.

Each action is made up of two parts:

The list of triggers is divided into a series of categories to organize the available triggers, selecting a category will bring a list of the available triggers into the right-hand section of the dialogue where you can select the one you want.

You can have more than one trigger on an object. Sometimes this will be to allow actions to take place depending on what the user does. You might have one action triggered by the mouse moving over an object (to display an instruction about the object for example) and you might have another trigger on the same object which responds to a left mouse click (to go to another page perhaps or play a video).

In other circumstances you may wish to have the same action triggered in different ways to give users an option. To mimic Powerpoint for example you might want to have the publication move onto the next page (slide) by clicking the left mouse button OR by pressing the spacebar. In this instance you would set up a multitrigger whereby both a left mosue click and a keypress trigger would perform the same Go to Page (Forward) action.

To add an action to a page or object:

  1. Open the Actions dialog box for the page or object you want to add an action to:

  1. Click on the Trigger tab to show the list of Trigger categories from which you can select a type of trigger.

  2. Click on one of the Trigger Categories to display the triggers available in each category. The triggers will appear in an icon list to the right.

  3. You can add a trigger from this list by double-clicking the left mouse button on the chosen item. Alternatively, click and hold down the left mouse button over your selected trigger and drag to the Actions organiser on the left side of the Actions dialog box. This will add the trigger to the Actions organiser.

  4. If there are additional settings for this trigger then a new tab will appear allowing you to specify one of the options available. Select a Mouse Click Modifier if you want from the Mouse Click tab.

Note:
This tab will only appear when you select a Mouse trigger as your trigger. Other triggers may also display an additional tab – see Choosing a Trigger for more information.

  1. Click on the Actions tab to add an action to your trigger, and then click on one of Action menus to display the actions available in each category.

  2. Click and hold down the left mouse button over your selected action and drag to the Actions Organiser on the left side of the Actions dialog box over the trigger you have just added. This will add the action to the trigger.

  3. Click on the QuickAnim tab to add an complex animation actions to your trigger, and then click on one of animation categories to display the actions available in each category.

Note:
Actions added via this system will take 1 second by default. You can easily edit the inserted actions to change the timing.

  1. Each action has its own specific settings that you can modify. A fourth level tab will appear after the Programming tab in the Actions dialog box that allows you to set particular options for that action. For example, choosing the Show action will allow you to specifically set which objects on the page to show.

You can add as many triggers to the Action Organiser as you want. Also, you can have as many actions under a trigger as you want.

The splitter button image\Splitter_Handle.jpg between the Actions Organiser and the tabs on the right of the Actions dialog allows you to expand the amount of space taken up by the Organiser. Move the mouse anywhere above the splitter button and the splitters vertical line will turn blue and the cursor will change to the image\Cursor_Resize_Horiz.jpg shape. Click and drag the vertical bar left and right to resize the panels while the image\Cursor_Resize_Horiz.jpg cursor is displayed.
