Using an External Text File to Update a Text Box

Text boxes can contain live information that is updated every time the Text object is displayed on the page. Some information in your publication may need constantly updating, such as prices, product lists, and so on. It is often quicker to open, edit and save a text document than it is to open Opus find the text box, edit the date and then republish your publication.

To Update a Text box from an external file:

  1. Draw a Text object on the page, as described in Adding Objects to a Page.

  2. Double-click the Text object to open its Properties dialog box, then click on the Text tab if this tab is not already open.

  3. Click on the Automatically read in this disk file option. The box and Browse… button underneath this option will become active.

  4. Click on the Browse… button to open the Windows Open dialog box, and then locate the text file on your computer that contains the text you want to add to this Text box.

  5. Click on the Apply button to save your changes.

Note:
The Text object will only show the actual text from the text file when the page is previewed or the final publication is run. The Text box on your page shows the error message that will appear if Opus cannot find the external file when the page is previewed or the publication is run. You can edit the error message text as well as add formatting to it. Please note, formatting the error message in the Text box will not affect the formatting of the text in the external text file or how it is displayed in the publication.

The right-click menu for Text objects contains a Save to file… option that allows you to create an external text file containing the text in this selected object – you can create a plain file (i.e. TXT file) or a formatted file (i.e. RTF file).
