Writing (Burning) a CD/DVD-Rom

To distribute your finished publication on CD or DVD-Rom, all the files produced by the Opus publishing process must be written (or "burned" as the process is known) to a CD.

If a copy of Nero Burning ROM is installed on the same computer as Opus this process can be handled automatically. However, current OS such as Vista or Windows v7 have CD writing built in so simply

The process is the same for DVD-Rom discs which are used for computer data but for DVD-video discs to play on domestic DVD-player see Publishing a DVD Publication for more information.

To burn a CD project using Windows 7 or Vista

The process for burning CDs is now built into Windows v7 and Vista so that you can simply copy files to a CD much as you would any other type of disc. This ensure you can keep up to date with burning formats independently of Opus or any other software,

  1. Publish your Opus project to a separate folder to ensure you can identify all the components. For the various settings and options you can use see Overview of the Publish Settings

  2. Close the Publish WIzard and run Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder you just published your files to.

Note:
If you have used the DocView object or have used the Launch action to display other files such as PDF you must ensure these are also copied to disc as they are not physically included with the Opus publication.

  1. Select all the files and any subdirectories the Burn option from the Explorer toolbar at the top of the window.

Simply follow the instructions Windows provides to burn these files to a CD/DVD-Rom in your drive.

To burn a CD project using Opus with Nero

  1. Publish your Opus project to a separate folder. For the various settings and options you can use see Overview of the Publish Settings

  2. Assuming the publish process completes without errors, close the Publish wizard and run the CD/DVD Publish Wizard from the Tools menu.

Note:
If this option is disabled it means you do not have the correct version of Nero installed. Please follow the instructions in the next section.

  1. Select the Write CD option. Another dialog will appear allowing you to choose whether to write the CD directly to disk or to use the Image Recorder to write a direct image of the DVD Video disk onto your hard disk so that it can be burnt to a disk later. This is useful if the DVD writer is temporarily unavailable or if you want to test the CD without burning a disk. Note that this image is a Nero-specific file and not the files required to construct the CD in any other tool.

  2. Click OK and the CD is automatically created directly from within Opus without any further interaction.

To burn an Opus CD project using third party CD software

These instructions are by their nature non-specific as each CD creation package works in a slightly different way but this should guide you along the right lines. If you experience difficulty please consult the DVD software help or manual on the process for writing a CD/DVD Rom format disc.

  1. Publish the Opus project to a folder. Open your preferred CD-writing tool.

  2. Create a new CD/DVD Data project. The type is very important – a DVD video disc requires a different set of files produced byt the DVD publishing process.

  3. Insert the files produced by the Opus DVD publish into the new project. In many DVD writing packages this is as simple as dragging and dropping the files and any subdirectories created by the Opus publishing process into the top level of the CD project. Make sure the directory structure is maintained.

  4. Burn the disc. This may also be labeled Create, Write or Burn Compilation, depending on the DVD software.

Nero

Opus uses the Nero Burning ROM API which enables DVDs to be created directly from Opus. This feature requires a copy of Nero to be installed on the same computer as Opus. If a suitable version of Nero is detected the DVD writing feature is automatically enabled. To burn DVD media requires Nero 5.5.9.4 or higher although we recommend v6 or higher.
