Using the Listbox Tool

On the Tools toolbar is the Listbox tool image\Icon_Object_Listbox.jpg. Use this tool if you want to add a Listbox to any page or Master Page in your publication and type directly into it.

A Listbox object allows you to create a menu of items in a text box, for example, a list of pages in your publication. Each new line of text in the Listbox object is a separate item and can be selected by the user. Opus keeps track of the line number and the text the user selected in variables, which can be used to decide what pages or objects should be displayed to the user based on their selection in the Listbox.

Note:
On the surface the Listbox object looks like a standard Text object with a scrollbar attached to it – however, it is more than this because the user can select single lines of text from it and go to other places in your publication based on your choice.

Saying that, in all other aspects the Listbox object is like a Text object: you can type text directly into the box, text can be updated from an external file and of course you can format the text – see Using the Text Tool for more information.

To add your list of entries to a Listbox:

  1. Draw a Listbox object on the page as described in Adding Objects to a Page.

  2. Click inside the Listbox box. The I-beam cursor will begin flashing inside the box.

  3. Type your first item on the first line of text – notice the text does not wrap around to a new line when it reaches the edge of the box. This is because each line is a separate item in your list.

Note:
Make sure the box is big enough to see the whole of the text you have typed.

  1. Press the Enter key at the end of the first line to enter a second line; this line will be the second item in the listbox. Type the text for the new option.

  2. For each new item you want in your Listbox object, press the Enter key to insert a new line – the scrollbar will resize as the list of options increase in the box.

Note:
Listbox objects only contain the following standard tabs in Properties dialog box: General, Background, Border, Effects and Permissions.

  1. A new Listbox tab appears in the Properties dialog that allows you to set the name of the variables that store the users line selection from the Listbox and the colour of the selected text – see Listbox tab for more information.
