Updating Publications

Opus allows you to publish updates of your stand alone publication by publishing sections you choose. This means you can provide new versions of pages or chapters via the internet or CD-Rom without distributing the whole publication.

This is particularly useful for large publications but can also be used to manage licencing and subscriptions. For example you include a subscription page which will only lets the publication run for a year but when the customer renews you simply send a new subscription page which runs for a further year.

You can choose to update publications by updating individual pages or by whole chapters. You need to publish the original publication in the appropriate format. You cannot mix update sections. Thus once you have chosen to publish and updateable publication to be updated by chapter you cannot update individual pages and vice versa.

Note:
You cannot add or delete pages (even if publishing chapters) so you need to ensure that the publication has all the pages you might need even if they are not active in a particular version. If you do need to add pages or delete pages you will need to republish the whole publication and supply that as an update.

Publishing Your Initial Publication

The first time you publish a publication you wish to update you will obviously need to publish the whole publication. However you will still need to specify the sections it will be broken down into.

On the first page of Publishing Wizard you should select the option to Create an Updatable Standalone Publication.

You will then be asked to choose how the publication will be divided up. If you will only ever update whole chapters then choose this option, otherwise choose the Pages option which will allow you to select individual pages to be updated.

Publishing Updates

When publishing the sections you have updated you should also choose the Create Updates option

and select the same section type (pages or chapters) that you chose when first publishing the work.

You can then continue with the publishing process as with any other standalone publication. Once that has completed you will be presented with a dialog allowing you to choose those sections of the publication you want to include in the update. Scroll through the publication and click on the section you want to update by placing a tick in the checkbox alongside.

You then simply continue with the publishing process as before. If you do not want to use the inbuilt Distribution Wizard to bundle the files together for distribution then you will need to make sure that all the files created by the publishing process are somehow made available for distribution.

In either case you will need to ensure that the files are then installed over the original publication or installed into the location where they can be located by the Update Publication action.
