The Purge Resources dialog

The Purge Resources dialog is used to remove unused resources from your publication. When you have completed your publication and are confident that you no longer require any unused resources, you can use the Purge Resources dialog.

Note:
Unused resources arise when you create an object on a page, (e.g. an Image object) and insert a resource into it (e.g. a graphic) then save your publication and consolidate your resources, after which, you delete the object. The resource will have been added to the Resource folder but not removed when the object was deleted in the publication.

Using the Purge Resources dialog:

1. When you first open the Purge Resources dialog, the Remove any files not used as resources from this directory option contains the name of the Resource folder for the current publication. You can click on the Browse… button if you want to purge files from a different folder on your machine.

Note:
If you use the Browse… button, make sure you open a folder that is related to this publication; otherwise you may delete files you didn’t intend to. For example, if you open a folder containing graphics that has no relation to the current publication, Opus will assume that because it cannot find any of the graphics in the objects within your publication that you want to delete them from this folder.

2. Tick the Purge subdirectories option if you want to remove all unused resources in sub folders of the Resource folder. By default, this option is not ticked.

3. Next click on the Make Purge List button to create the list of resources in the folder specified (point 1 above) – the unused resources will be listed in the Files to be purged pane.

Note:
If this pane remains blank, then there are no unused resources in the Resources folder for this publication.

4. Click the Do Purge button if you want to remove ALL of the resources listed in the Files to be purged pane. Alternatively, if you want to remove only selected files; continue reading points 5 to 8 below.

Note:
In the Files to be purged pane, hold down the Shift key as you select the top and bottom resource in the list if you want to select a range of resources. Alternatively, hold down the Ctrl key if you want to select individual resources in the Files to be purged pane.

5. Use the Delete the files option in the Purge Files By panel if you want to delete the resource files from the system completely.

Note:
Deleted files cannot be recovered at a later date.

6. Use the Move the files to the Recycle Bin option in the Purge Files By panel if you want to move the resource files to the Windows Recycle Bin, which you can then delete as and when you want.

Note:
You can also takes files out of the Recycle Bin if you decide you need them after all.

7. Use the Move the files to this directory option in the Purge Files By panel if you want to enter a folder on your machine where the resource files should be moved. Click on the Browse… button to open the Windows Browse for Folder dialog and locate the folder in which you want to store the resource files.

Note:
This option is useful if you are not sure whether you may need some of the resources at a later date.

8. Use the Delete Empty Subdirectories option if you want to delete sub folders of the Resource folder (entered in point 1 above) when it contains no files. By default, this action is ticked.

9. Click on the Do Purge button to purge your unused resources. Alternatively, click on the Cancel button if you do not want to purge at this time.
