Question Formats

The new Question object is designed to automatically process a series of different question formats by checking the score at the relevant time and updating all the scoring variables.

Note:
If your chosen question format uses radio buttons to allow the user only one choice please check the Understanding Radio Buttons topic for additional information

Question templates are divided into several different formats based on the way they function:

Multiple Selection – allows the user to choose more than one answer. There needs to be button to allow the user to confirm the answers once they are happy with their choices. It also has the important function of telling Opus that more than one answer should score – the total score Opus keeps for calculating the variables will include ALL the scores included here.

Single Selection – only one answer is required and the question will be confirmed automatically once the user has made their choice. Apart from the obvious question and answer test this can be used with other tyes of trigger for a wide variety of tests and simulations.

Single Selection with Confirm – only one answer is allowed but the user can change their answer until they are happy with it and then press a button to confirm.

Text Input – allows user to type in their own answer and for that input to be checked against one or more words or phrases. There needs to be button to allow the user to confirm the answers once they are happy with their choices.

Multiple Text Input – a single question which requires more the user to type in more than one answer. A cloze procedure is a good example of this. It can also be used to check a long answer or short essay! Again this has the important function of telling Opus that more than one answer should score – the total score Opus keeps for calculating the variables will include ALL the scores included here.

Drag and Drop – Questions based around dragging and dropping the answer. It might be text labels or it might be placing pictures in order. Drag and Drop Multiple allows for more than one answer to be scored.

Note:
You can always change the type of question at any point by selecting it from the drop down list provided on the Question tab of the Properties for the Question object.

Most of these formats require a Confirm Question option whereby the user must press a separate button to submit or confirm their answer. Formats such as text input or multiple response questions will always need a submit option as there is not an obvious point at which the user has finished answering the question. However, the Single Select option can respond as soon as the answer is chosen so that has two formats available.

Note:
For any Question Format requiring a Confirm, no scoring will take place until you have used Confirm Question for the particular question.

Question Types

From this we have built a wide range of question templates providing all the different types of question used in tests as well as some more unusual ones. A full catalogue of question templates and how to make the most of them is provided in the resources section of our website.

The key categories include:

Cloze Procedure

The cloze procedure is a particular kind of test where the user is asked to provide words or phrases to complete a sentence. The words might have to be typed in or there might be a selection provided to be dragged and dropped into the correct position.

Diagram

A set of queston templates designed for tests requiring the identificatoin of elements of a picture or diagram. The answers can be provied by drag and drop or by typing the correct answer into a text input box.

Drag and Drop

To answer these questions the user drag one or more objects into a drop zone in order to select the answer. These might be text labels, text answers or pictures.

Long Answer

The new Question object provides a multi-level and sophisticated search which allows versatile testing of the text input by the user. This allows for even long answers to be marked by checking for key words and phrases. These questions are those allowing users to type in long answers and for these to be checked.

In Sequence

Questions in which the user is required to place words or pictures in the correct order. This is usually by dragging and dropping the items into the correct order but can also be by swapping objects until the correct order is achieved.

Match Drag and Drop

This question provides pairs of objects – questions and answers, two part phrases or concepts or other matching pairs which the user must joing together by dragging one side to the other.

Hotspot

These are image-based questions in which user’s must correctly identify the area of the image which indicates the correct answer. There may be one or more answers required.

Fill in the Blanks

In these questions the user is asked to type their own answer into the box provided.

Multiple Choice

Questions where several different answers provided but only one is correct. The user can choose the answer by clicking on a particular object – this can simply be a piece of text, an image or a radio button.

Note

When adding more than one question which uses radio buttons (as buttons or with images) you must change the index for each set of radio buttons. This is to ensure each question is in the same group but is distinct fomr other groups. Selecting a radio button automatically deselects all the others in the group so Opus needs to know what group the buttons belongs to. Otherwise you may find the button in one question has been set as selected by the choice made in a previous one.

For example all the buttons used in the first question used the Index 1, then all the buttons in the next question which uses radio buttons should all have the index 2 and so on:..

Q1 – Answer button 1 – index 1

Q1 – Answer Button 2 – index 1

Q1 – Answer Button 3 – index 1

Next Question using radio buttons (multiple choice) is Question 5.

Q5 – Answer button 1 – index 2

Q5 – Answer Button 2 – index 2

Q5 – Answer Button 3 – index 2

The index is set on the Button Properties tab.

Mutliple Response

These are questions where several different answers are provided and one or more can be chosen. Again the choice would be made by selecting a piece of text or an image, or by clicking a checkbox style button.

Slider

These questions require an answer which can be represented on a scale and the user chooses the correct answer by dragging a slider to the correct location.

True or False

As the name suggests these are simply questions which allow the user to choose between two options – true or false. The selection would be made by selecting the relevant text or a button.

This question type often uses radio buttons so please see the note above about radio button indexes.
