The General tab for Opus Flex

The General tab in the Publishing Settings dialog for Opus Flex publications is different than for the other types of publications you can create in the Publish Wizard. The General tab allows you to set the way the publish should handle the data in your publication and how to output the published version. All of these options have initial default settings.

To edit the General tab settings:

  1. Use the Frame rate box to set the number of frames displayed per second. Use the spin buttons beside the box to increase or decrease the frame rate. By default, the number of frames created is 20 frames per second.

Note:
A frame is a snapshot of a page and its contents. Too low a frame rate may make the publication look jerky and too high a frame rate may make it run slower as the screen is continually trying to update. If you change the default rate, test your publication to see how it runs at the new frame rate.

  1. Use the HTML File Mode panel to set if you want to create a sample HTML web page as well as the Adobe Flash SWF file during the publish process.

Note:
Most of the time you will want to embed your published project in an HTML web page. To help you do this Opus can produce an example HTML file.

  1. Select the Inline HTML option in the HTML File Mode panel to create a single HTML file with the Adobe Flash (swf) file embedded in it.

Note:
You would use this method when you want the publication to form part of the page.

  1. Select the Popup HTML option in the HTML File Mode panel to create two HTML files, one of which launches the other.

Note:
The first file contains links to launch the second file, which contains the publication in a separate window. When using this method any Exit action in the publication will close the window. You would use this method to launch your publication as a separate multimedia presentation from your main web page.

  1. Select the No HTML option in the HTML File Mode panel to only create the Adobe Flash (swf) file.

Note:
You can use this method when you want to run this publication in the Adobe Player or if you want to add or create your own web page and just reference the publication within it.

  1. Tick the Test in Adobe Flash… option if you want to test your publication in the Adobe Flash Player.

Note:
Click the Test button on the last page of the Publish wizard that appears once the publication has been processed. This will test run the publication in the Adobe Flash Player. Obviously, if you do not have this player on your computer, the Test button will do nothing.

  1. Tick the Use Device Fonts for… option if you want to use device fonts for small fonts sizes used in your publication.

Note:
Opus now supports Flash Type so the Flash text output will look the best it possibly can and therefore use of device fonts should be avoided.

Special Note:

Device fonts require that the device font be on the computer that is running the publication.

  1. Use the Mouse Triggers panel to deal with the use of the mouse in Opus Flex publications.

Note:
The Adobe Flash (swf) format does not use the right-mouse trigger at all; this is in part because Macintosh computers do not have a right-mouse button. However, many software simulations for training require the use of a right mouse click so Opus now intercepts the right-mouse click in Flash and allows you to use it as you would any other trigger. This option is designed for Internet Explorer and Firefox but may not work on other browsers or if browser security settings are set to restrict scripts on a page.

  1. Use the Trigger right mouse with left mouse option in the Mouse Triggers panel if you want any Right Mouse Click triggers in your publication to be activated by the Left Mouse Click trigger.

Note:
This can be useful if you are republishing an existing publication with Opus Flex. Any actions listed under a right-mouse click will be run as well as the actions listed under the left-mouse click triggers

  1. Use the Discard right mouse actions option in the Mouse Triggers panel if you want the publication to ignore actions listed under the Right Mouse Click trigger.

Note:
When using this option, you should always check the actions a right-mouse trigger does before you republish an existing publication. For example, if your right-click mouse trigger hides an object and your left-mouse click trigger shows the same object, the object will show and then hide instantly, giving the impression it never showed at all. This is because the left mouse click actions were activated and then followed by the right-mouse click actions, and in this example, one trigger cancelled the operation of the other! If you have set up a button to have right-mouse click triggers that reverse the process of a left-mouse click trigger on the same button it may be better and quicker to select the Discard right mouse actions option in the General tab.

  1. Use the Double Click Time option in the Mouse Triggers panel to set the speed of the double-click in milliseconds. Use the spin buttons to increase or decrease the speed between the first and second click of the mouse, alternatively type a new number in the box.

  2. Make your changes to the other tabs in the Publish Settings dialog, then click the OK button to close the dialog and return to the third page of the Publish Wizard to start publishing.
