Using the Draw Tools

Opus is supplied with a series of drawing tools for creating the objects most commonly used in creating publication pages. These include straight lines, circles, stars, polygons, squares and rounded rectangles. You can even draw with a selection of ready-made shapes such as speech bubbles, frames and flashes. All the objects drawn with these tools are vector graphics.

On the Tools toolbar is the Draw tool image\Icon_Tool_Draw.jpg. Use this tool if you want to draw a shape on any page or Master Page in your publication.

To select a draw tool:

  1. On the Tools toolbar, click the Draw tool button. A floating Draw Tools toolbar will appear on screen.

  2. Click on the tool you want to draw with, and then move the cursor over your page.

  3. If you select the straight lines tool, click with the left mouse button where you want the line to start, then move the mouse to the next point and click again. Repeat moving and clicking until you have drawn the required shape. Click on the Selection tool image\Icon_Tool_Selection.jpg on the Tools toolbar to stop drawing.

Note:
If you hold down the Shift key when using this tool your drawing will be snapped to the grid for that page if the grid is not turned on. This is particularly useful for ensuring that straight lines are level.

  1. If you select the Square, Circle, Polygon, Star or AutoShape tool, click on the down arrow beside the tool, then click on the required shape from the list provided.

  2. Click with the left mouse button on the page where you want the top left corner of the object to be, then keeping the left mouse button pressed down, drag the cursor over to the right and down until you have described the area you want the object to cover. Release the mouse to stop drawing the object.

Note:
Any line or shape you have drawn with a Draw tool can be edited, for example, straight lines can be curved, and vice versa. Once you have drawn a shape it can be edited, reshaped and repositioned so your drawing does not have to be perfectly accurate to start with.

You can change the outline and fill colour of your drawn graphic.

You can change the thickness and line style of the pen when drawing the graphic or once it has been drawn.

You can add a graphic end cap to each line such as arrowheads or end-markers.

These options are either available by selecting the colour or style from the toolbar palettes or by going to the Properties dialog for the polygon or contour and selecting the Line Tab. Remember that these properties are for the individual elements (polygons, lines, contours) of the vector not the whole vector object itself.
