Using the Animation Path tool

Any object that appears on a page can be made to follow a path drawn with the Animation Path tool. You can draw and edit the shape of the path in the same way that you draw shapes using the Draw tool. Once you have drawn an animation path, you can add it to an object using the Animation Wizard.

On the Tools toolbar is the Animation Path tool image\Icon_Object_Path.jpg. Use this tool if you want to add an animation path to a page in your publication.

Note:
You can have as many animation paths as you like on a page, each one can be used for a different object. Alternatively, you can create one path that is shared by a number of objects on the same page.

Animation paths only show in the Opus editor and do not show when you preview the page or run the final published version of the publication.

Creating an Animation Path:

  1. On the Tools toolbar, click the Animation Path tool image\Icon_Object_Path.jpg button. A floating Draw Tools toolbar will appear on screen.

Note:
The Draw Tools toolbar is the same one used by the Draw tool and contains the same draw options. However, the path you draw does not contain a fill colour. The line drawn is a single pixel line with arrows pointing in the direction the object will travel.

  1. Click on the tool you want to draw with, and then move the cursor over your page.

  2. If you select the straight lines tool, click with the left mouse button where you want the line to start, then move the mouse to the next point and click again. Repeat moving and clicking until you have drawn the required shape. Click on the Selection tool image\Icon_Tool_Selection.jpg on the Tools toolbar to stop drawing.

Note:
If you hold down the Shift key when using this tool your drawing will be snapped to the grid for that page if the grid is not turned on. This is particularly useful for ensuring that straight lines are level.

  1. If you select the Square, Circle, Polygon, Star or AutoShape tool, click on the down arrow beside the tool, then click on the required shape from the list provided.

  2. Click with the left mouse button on the page where you want the top left corner of the object to be, then keeping the left mouse button pressed down, drag the cursor over to the right and down until you have described the area you want the object to cover. Release the mouse to stop drawing the object.

  3. Use the Animation Wizard to have an object follow the Animation Path you have just drawn.

Flipping, Mirroring and Reversing the Animation Path:

  1. Click on the Animation Path on the page to select. A bounding box will surround the path. Then do one or more of the following steps below.

  2. To reverse the direction of the path, right click on the path to open the right-click menu, then select the Reverse Direction option. The arrows on the path will point in the opposite direction from the original.

  3. To flip the path, click on the Draw menu and select the Flip option.

  4. To mirror the path, click on the Draw menu and select the Mirror option.

Note:
Any line or shape you have drawn with a Draw tool can be edited, for example, straight lines can be curved, and vice versa. Once you have drawn a shape it can be edited, reshaped and repositioned so your drawing does not have to be perfectly accurate to start with.
