Using the Web Font Manager

The Web Font Manager is a special tool for HTML5 publications which is available on Tools menu.

Opus offers real flexibility in the fonts you can use on a website. You can use any font you like and choose how to have them included in the code – using the @fontface system, rendering them as graphics or relying on them being on the user’s system.

Using Web Fonts

The Web Font Manager lists the directories where your fonts are installed and allows you to set how those fonts are used when publishing to HTML5.

Web Safe and Fallback Fonts

Opus automatically creates a special set of fonts called Web Safe fonts which cover the three key fallback font types Serif, Sans-serif and Monospaced. These are represented in the Opus editor by Times, Arial and Courier New respectively.

You cannot edit this setting or add or delete fonts to this virtual directory.

Using Fonts in the Editor

Tick the box alongside the relevant directory to show the fonts in that directory in the font list in Opus and then use them in text objects as you would normally.

Adding Other Directories

If you have other font directories you want to include click the Add button to browse for those. To remove a directory simply click on it to select it and then click the Remove button. The directory will only be removed from the Web Font Manager not will not be deleted from your disk.

Font Settings

The Web Font Manager lets you decide how the fonts in a particular directory will be treated. Select the directory from the list and press Edit to modify the setting and choose one of the following.

Publish

Use the Publish option to use particular fonts you want on your material but which are not available as Google Web fonts and which you have converted yourself. Make sure the directory contains the same font in all the webfont formats – TTF, SVG and WOFF. Opus Pro will automatically copy the files to your publish directory so that they can be transferred to your web server along with your HTML.

Google Webfonts

Google provides a wide range of free fonts for use oin web pages. Opus Pro cannot see these fonts while editing unless you download the TTF version from Google and make it available via the Web Font Manager.

Render Fonts

This will cause the fonts to be converted to vector graphic and therefore will no longer be editable, or searchable. Should not be used for text input or test with variables in and is not recommended for long pieces of text.

Do Not Publish Font

With this option selected the font will not be distributed with your publication in any way. Instead, any text using it will rely on finding the font on the viewer’s system. If it does not find the particular font it will make a substitution and obviously this may mean the formatting of objects changes.

This is best used for the websafe fonts listed in the next section as they can be assumed to be on all systems.
