Using the DocView Tool

The DocView tool allows you to create a live viewport for any ActiveX document, such as a Adobe Flash movie, a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet or a PowerPoint presentation.

Your original document will be opened inside the DocView (Document View) window and you will be able to use any controls within your original document to navigate around the document, for example you will be able to move through slides in a PowerPoint publication or scroll through text in a Word document.

On the Tools toolbar is the DocView tool image\Icon_Object_DocView.jpg. Use this tool if you want to add a live viewport to another program file.

Note:
The DocView does not convert the file displayed (such as a Word document or a PowerPoint publication) into an Opus publication; it simply provides a live window to see the original document. Therefore, you must have the original software installed on your computer and on your user’s computer to view a file in a DocView.

You can view the following files in a DocView: Adobe Acrobat files (.PDF), Microsoft Word file (.DOC), Microsoft Excel files (.XLS), Microsoft PowerPoint files (.PPT) and Adobe Flash files (.SWF).

To add a DocView to a page:

  1. Draw a DocView object on the page as described in Adding Object to a Page. Make sure you draw a large enough window to view the contents of the original document. The object’s Properties dialog box will open showing the DocView tab.

  2. Click on the Browse button to open the Windows Open File dialog box, which allows you to locate the document you want to view.

  3. Click on the Outline Border option if you want a one pixel width black border to appear around the DocView object. The border will appear when you preview the publication or run the final published version of the publication. Untick the box if you do not want a border to appear around the object.

  4. Click on the Apply button to save your changes.

Closing a publication with a DocView:

  1. When displaying a DocView window in a publication you must remember that this is a window on an independent program. To close your publication (pressing Esc for example) you must ensure you click on the publication so that Windows know which program to close.

  2. The DocView window can only be closed by the Opus publication. Closing the Opus publication will close the DocView.

Note:
The Docview object can display Flash movies but we recommend that you use the Video object instead. Flash movies have a SWF file extension and are commonly referred to as swf movies. There is now the additional format of Flash video which has an FLV extension.

Some Flash movies are interactive, in other words, you can press buttons, mouse-over objects or play games. These movies must be played back using the Always on Top setting for the video properties to allow access to the interactivity.
