Restrictions on Reading and Writing to Text or Disk Files

The Read and Write actions in the Storage menu can only be used when you publish as a standalone publication – they cannot be used when you publish to the web or Opus Flex. There are two reasons why you cannot use these read or write actions:

1: Security. A publication should not be able to read or write from a local computer, this is to avoid malicious users from destroying files or stealing data from another computer. Opus along with other software, such as Java, works within a ‘sandbox’, which simply means it works in a secure zone that cannot affect the end users computer.

2: Incorrect method of communicating with a web server. To read and write from or to a web server is not the same as reading ‘local’ files on an end users computer. The term ‘local’ refers to the end users machine where the web plug-in is running and not the web server. The correct way to communicate with a web server is to use the Post Web Data action.
