Solving Problems with Publications

Opus allows you lots of flexibility, provides lots of different ways of doing things but this means it can be easy to find the publication does not quite work the way you were expecting. Many of these issues arise because of specific resources or the way inwhich they have been used. This topic provides a range of things you can do to indentify and solve problems yourself.

Identify the Problem

Knowing where a problem is arising is often a key part of finding the solution.

Try the following options to try to indentify where and how the problem is arising and then this will give you an idea of what might solve it.

  1. Try restarting Opus or closing other programs you are running. If you’ve been using Opus for a long time, especially with other programs running it can cause "weariness" in swapping things in and out of the Windows pagefile and sometimes causes fonts and font listing to go a little haywire. Simply restarting Opus or restarting your computer can solve the problem.

  2. Try closing your publication and reopening it. This refreshes all the resources and checks links to resources.

  3. Does the problem arise with a brand new publication or one you have been working on for a long time. Try recreating the problem by doing the same thing in a new publication.

  4. Does the problem only occur in a publication you created in an earlier version of Opus and/or converted to different publication type.

  5. Does the problem arise on a particular page? Try copying and pasting the page in question to a new publication and see if the problem persists.

  6. If you have identified a particular page try removing specific resources to see if that resolves the issue.

Problems with Resources

Sometimes problems arise with particular resources – video files in particular or Flash files.

  1. Try a different format, this applies to video and audio files in particular.

  2. Try changing the video type on the Video Properties – if the file runs in Media Player then use the Always on Top option.

Problems with the Published files

Sometimes problems arise when the publication has been published which did not occur in the editor.

  1. Launch file doesnt work– when launching an additional file such as a PDF or PPT file you need to tell Opus where to find it when published. See Launch File.

  2. Publication does not run – is it possible the file is very large and taking a long time to start? If there is a large video file in the publication try using Resource Manager to set it up to play from outside the publication rather than be incorporated. Does the publication start but then stops on a particular page. Try the options above to test particular pages or resources.

  3. Flash publication does not run– make sure you have set the correct security settings to allow you to run the Flash file locally (search the internet for Adobe Security Settings). Try your file on the internet.. Check your publication for Hide or Show actions with no objects attached as this can confuse Flash.

  4. HTML5 Video does not run – make sure your webserver includes MP4 files in its list of supported file types. Contact your web-hosting company or server administrator if required.

  5. My Flash/HTML5 file runs OK but a page appears blank– make sure that the page does not contain any actions with no objects attached or any script which might be broken.

Specific Problems

Here are some of the problems which we get asked about most:

  1. No RTTI data– an error occurs and a box appears with this message. This message means Opus can’t find some information it needed, It is usually caused by repeatedly using Undo and Redo when memory is low, or when deleting a resource and then using Undo to reinstate it.

It is sometimes caused by trying to move or amend an object whichj has been set to Concealin the Editor or which does not appear on the page currently being previewed.

It is also caused by a resource in the publication becoming corrupt somehow. Either the original file has become corrupt or Opus has lost the connection ot it. Try restarting Opus and/or your computer and if that doesn’t clear it try copy and pasting pages into a new publication to locate the problem page or do the same with the resource son a page to locate the resource causing problems.

  1. Video runs in media player but not in Opus– Change the video type on the Video Properties to Always on Top

  2. Duplicate Objects – very occasionally with larger publications Opus can create duplicate ghost objects where the objects on your page appear in the Orgnizer twice. This is usually caused by dragging and dropping large numbers of files and so if this happens to you regularly we recommend you use cut and paste instead. To solve the problem try deleting all the objects and then selecting Undo or deleting each object in turn (the ghost will be deleted and the original remiain).
