Passwords tab

The Passwords tab in the Publication Properties dialog allows you to limit access to the publication or to individual chapters within it to authorised users only.

To edit the Passwords tab settings:

  1. Use the Enable Passwords option if you want to password protect your publication. Ticking this option will highlight the rest of the options in the tab.

  2. Click on the Add button to add a new password to the Passwords list. This will open the New Password dialog box – see section below for more information.

Note:
The password is not case sensitive and it can contain spaces.

  1. To apply the new password to a chapter, select the password in the Passwords list and the click the checkboxes beside the chapters in the Chapters list to which the password can be used.

Note:
If you specify more than one password for a particular chapter, then any of the passwords will allow access to it.

  1. To remove a password from the Passwords list, select the password in the list and click the Remove button.

  2. Use the Prompt for password at Start option in the Password Input panel if you want to specify a single password controlling access to the publication.

Note:
When using this option, you should give all the chapters the same password.

  1. Use the Prompt for password as required option in the Password Input panel if you want to control access on a chapter-by-chapter basis. The user is then prompted for the appropriate password when they carry out an action that would normally move them to another chapter e.g. a Button object with a Go to Page action attached.

  2. Use the Don’t prompt – use CHAPTER_PASSWORD variable option in the Password Input panel if you want the user to enter the password into a Text Input object within the publication – see Text Input tab for more information on adding a variable to a Text Input object.

Note:
With this option, the user will have to enter a password on screen before they can go a chapter.

  1. Use the If goto page fails, go to this page option if the user should be directed to a specific page when they enter a wrong password. Click the down arrow next to the Page list box to list all of the pages in the current publication.

Note:
The page that the user is directed to could contain details on how to enter the password and/or provide appropriate buttons to continue or exit the publication.

  1. Use the Disable passwords in editor preview option if you do not want to have to enter passwords as you are developing the content of your publication. By default, this option is selected.

Note:
When you preview the publication you will not have to enter the passwords. However, when the publication is published, the passwords will be enabled. This option is useful as a timesaving device as you continually preview your publication during development.

  1. Click on the Apply button to save your settings.

The New Password dialog:

  1. The New Password dialog will appear when you click the Add button in the Passwords tab.

  2. Type the password in the Enter new password box.
